To stay or to relocate (Anak Krakatoa)
Purpose
Final Decision: Stay!
Rationale
Fertile Soil
The soil around the volcano is
fertile
, so it is suitable for growing crops. This will provide ample food for people living there, and will also improve the economy when they sell the crops grown.
Tourism
Volcanoes attract millions of
visitors
every year. Around the Volcanoes are usually warm bathing lakes, hot springs, bubbling mud pools and steam vents which would appeal to the tourists.
This creates jobs in shops, restaurants, hostels and tourist centers which would in turn
increase the job opportunities
and
improve the economy
of the country.
Emotional connections
The people there have stayed there since young so they would have
fond memories
there and would not be willing to leave the area
Assumptions
The villagers live a simple lifestyle with close to no technology involved
Education provided there is not enough for finding a job in the urban area
Healthcare services provided there is not advanced as compared to the urban areas
The villagers will find it difficult to adapt to the urban way of living
Concepts
Adaption
Social
Government
Economic
Change and Continuity
Issue
Stay: What will happen if the volcano erupts?
Risk of death and injury
Indirect
Landslides
Wildfires
Falling rocks and debris
Direct
Killed by the lava
Wasted money and resources
Houses will be destroyed and money and resources would have to be put in to rebuild the houses once the villagers come back from the evacuation site
Relocate: How will the lifestyle of the villagers be affected?
Villagers might find it hard to find good jobs, as their education level may not be suitable and they may have to take jobs such as road sweeping.
Villagers will have to adapt to the new urban environment which would be difficult considering the fact that they are used to a more "simple" life style as they have been living in a village since childhood
Points of View
Villagers
Stay
They have an emotional connection to the place, as they grew up there, and their houses and businesses are held there
Government
Relocate
There is a danger living near an active volcano and they fear for their citizen's lives
Inferences
The villagers might be scared of Anak Krakatoa and will obviously be in a frenzied manner when it erupts.
The warning system may be a bit late and in the state they are they probably won't hear it or pay attention to it.
The sound of the blast from the volcano will explode the villager's eardrums and many will have a problem hearing each other and some people will be blown away by the blast.
Information/Evidence
When Anak Krakatoa previously erupted, the eruption was equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT and the sound of the explosion was heard 4800 kilometers away.
Implications
Relocating
Pros
Safer
Better healthcare services
More urban way of living: Less labor work to maintain the house hold e.g. No need to collect water from wells
Cons
Villagers will have to adapt to the new urban environment which would be difficult considering the fact that they are used to a more "simple" life style as they have been living in a village since childhood
