CORE TWO: ENERGY SYSTEMS
-
- Energy systems provide the energy required by muscles for movement.
- Energy is produced by the breakdown of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to adenosine diphosphate (ADP)
- When ADP combines with creatine phosphate (PC), more ATP is produced.
- The energy systems are not used in isolation but at the same time
- At certain times during sports, one energy system will be dominant
Lactic Acid System
-
Efficiency of ATP Production:Quick ATP production but fatigues drastically as lactic acid levels rise.
-
-
-
Recovery Process:Activity intensity decreases/ceases. Increased breathing rates: lactic acid broken down in presence of O2
-
-
Aerobic System
Source of Fuel:Carbohydrates stored in muscle and liver as glycogen, fats and occasionally protein.

Sporting Example:Marathon, Cross country skiing
