How can psychology affect performance - Motivation
Positive
Definiton - When performers are treated with respect as individuals, and receive praise, encouragement, recognition and rewards for effort
A reward for good performance or the desire to succeed to feel happy, content or satisfied
E.g. if a coach says the player will receive $500 if he wins
E.g. Winning for the praise, congratulations, recognition, adoration and approval or even positive self talk
Athletes who utilise positive motivation = likely to take risks, be creative and perform under pressure
Negative
Defintion - When results occur from fear of failure and negative feedback on poor performance > to avoid undesirable consequences
Causes you to think of what you don't want to happen
E.g. A player beating himself up abut poor performance (Negative, intrinsic)
E.g. Coach says the player will do a 30 minute anaerobic training session if they lose (Negative extrinsic)
Extrinisc
Definition - When recognition takes material forms such as gold medals, sponsorship and financial rewards OR external reward e.g. praise from coach or family member
External rewards e.g money and praise from other provides more satisfaction than the task itself
E.g. home ground advantage = large crowds = more cheering/adoration/praise = larger extrinsic motivation
E.g. Gettiing a $1000 bonus if they win provides more satisfaction than playing the game or feeling good about winning
Motivation overview:
Elite athletes have various motivators to succeed
Positive motivation is more effective than negative
Negative motivation can result in decreased motivation and self confidence = more conservative performance (afraid to take risks + overthinking/anxious)
Intrinsic is the best type as when pressure and extrinsic motivators aren't there you can motivate yourself = perform better
If intrinsic and extrinsic are used together = best combination as e.g. want to inspire fans and earn more money as well as getting the satisfaction/high after training
Intrisic
Definition - Self evaluation by the performer of their performance
Best form of motivation as it produces long term results as they become their own motivator = achieving long term goals
E.g. An athlete who wants to do well for the satisfaction found in achieving a personal best
Marathon, swimming and cycling need this motivation = motivate themselves for long periods of time
