Rebellion of Hereward the Wake 1071
Causes
in spring 1070, king sweign bought fleet to England threatening invasion
fleet based in Ely, which was a marshy island and hard to attack. Ely contains lots of rebels - leader Hereward
East Anglia (part of Danelaw) and king Sweign of Denmark made alliances, including rebel leader Hereward
Fenland terrain was an advantage to rebels as they could easily fight in gorilla warfare
Events
William surrounded Island and ordered for a bridge to be built - first one failed and lots of men and horses drowned in marsh. Second one successful though
In fighting Hereward probably escaped - no evidence
William sent messages to King Sweign, offered him money if he would leave - Danes sailed home from Peterborough Abbey as all they wanted was to enrich themselves
Morcar surrened and was imprisoned for life, some rebels were punished by having their hands and feet chopped off

Reasons for failure
Hereward betrayed rebels and ran away
Danes abandoned Rebels which made their force a lot weaker
Abbot Thurstan of Ely showed Normand a secret way into Ely to protect the Cathedral
Consequences
William knew he could no longer trust Anglo Saxons so took them down from all positions of power
More land and money taken from anglo Saxons, which made William more wealthy and powerful
Rebels had harsh punishments
Ended large scale rebellions amoungst anglo Saxons as William proved how powerful and harsh he could be
Morcar imprisoned for life
