Pathophysiology
Inflammation and swelling of the epiglottis, aryepiglottic folds, and arytenoids
As edema increases, lateral borders curl and the tip of the epiglottis protrudes posteriorly and inferiorly
During inspiration swollen epiglottis is pulled (sucked) over the laryngeal inlet (severe can occlude this opening completely)
