Political
Elections had been held after the end of the Second War. A group working for the rights of ordinary Hungarians , won 57% of the vote. the Russians refused to allow the party to form a gov. with only 17% of the vote.
Repression
Russians conquered Hungarian Society including censorship the secret police ( AVH) and the schools taught.
Economics
After the war, Hungary was poor and like a lot Europe, needed rebuilding after years of bombing and damage. This made the standards of living dropped for ordinary people.
Religion
The Hungarians were religious but under the Communist Party religion was banned and dismissed as "dangerous propaganda". Cardinal Joseph Mindszenty, leading Hungarian Catholic, was arrested, tortured and put in jail.

Imre Nagy- Hungarian prime minister. He asked Khrushchev to remove Russian troops from Hungary and promised the people free elections.
