Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe
Format
no patterns in stanzas or lines
i don’t think the poems format could be visually depicting anything from the poem
Tone
the tone of the poem is sad but also loving
phrases from the poem that represent this: That the wind came out of a cloud, chilling And killing my Annabel Lee, In her tomb by the side of the sea, So that her highborn kinsman came And bore her away from me, Went envying her and me, Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee
i think this because the speaker is obviously upset about annabel lee dying but you can also tell that he still loves her by the way he talks about her and describes the love they shared when she was still living
Rhythm
I think Poe added rhythm to the lines to make the poem flow better
Motifs
some motifs in things that i have read that were written by edgar allan poe include:
poe Mourning the death of a woman, i think this represents that poe has lost a lot of women in his life that meant a lot to him - another is kingdoms/ palaces i think these kingdoms/ palaces could represent poems interpretation of what heaven is like - stories/ Poems starting nicely then taking a dark/ sad turn, i think this could represent how poe thinks about his life, starting out nicely and then taking a turn and getting dark
repetition
some repetition shows up in this poem
including the words/ phrases: “In a kingdom by the sea, which draws the reader's attention to where the speaker and annabel lee live” “Of the beautiful Annabel Lee this draws the reader’s attention to how pretty the speaker thought annabel lee is” “love, this represents How much he loved annabel lee” “Angels this draws the readers attention to the fact that the speaker assumes annabel lee is in heaven”
Alliteration
there is alliteration in this poem
some examples of the alliteration in this poem are: “The angels, not half so happy in Heaven” “That the wind came out of a cloud, chilling” “Of those who were older than we”
How Poe's life relates
i think the poem annabel lee directly relates to his wife virginia dying of tuberculosis
i think this because the speaker in that poem obviously loved annabel lee a lot just like poe loved virginia,
i also think this because annabel lee was written 2 years after virgiania passed away
Speaker
the speaker is upset that annabel lee is being taken away from him but he knows that their love is very strong so she isn't 100% being taken away from him
Rhyme
irregular rhyming pattern
i think Poe made the poem rhyme so that it runs together better
I think the rhyming gives the poem a tone that contrasts the tone of the words because i think the tone of the words are sad and harsh but the tone of the poem is light and gentle
