Environmental Impact
Leaving computers on standby
Users can use either standby mode (sleep mode) or hibernate mode
Standby
Software data is kept while on standby up until the user continues
Component power is either reduced or turned off
RAM is still powered
Hibernate
RAM contents are copied to hard disk
A permanent copy is saved in the hard disk
Almost all component are turned off and the ones that aren't reduce the energy use to very low
Standby/hibernate compared with shutdown
A surge of power is given to components after shutdown so its better to do this is little as possible
Standby and hibernate are better for users that plan on using the system again after a short time
Its better to use standby or hibernate rather than shutting it down
Energy use
Components and peripherals that use power while system is turned on
Printer
Scanner
Mouse
If connected to a network - Router/Hub
Keyboard
Monitor or Touchscreen
Motherboard
Graphics Card
Sound Card
CPU
Network Interface Card
Bigger computer systems like desktops use more energy than smaller ones like smartphones
Monitor Settings
Ways to save energy
If you can use efficiency mode
Avoid using screen savers
Reduce the brightness completely
Use energy efficient monitors
They usually have an energy star sticker
Also when the screen brightness lowers after a certain period of time
Power down settings
Ways system settings improve efficiency and reduce energy use
Turn off the desktop/laptop after a certain time has passed
Turn off the monitor after a certain time has passed
Change individual settings like
Turning off the hard drive after a set time has passed which will turn back on when a key is pressed
Change the processor state settings to a min/max range
With higher settings it will use more energy
With lower settings the processor cant handle as much
Change the power settings for wireless adaptors
Users can use software to check their power efficiency and see what they can do to make is better
