Macbeth: Other Characters
Duncan
King of Scotland.
Gracious, humble, fatherly figure.
But historically, he was none of these things.
Ideal King ruling with divine right.
This was something Shakespeare's patron - King James I - strongly believed in.
Has no failings, which serves to highlight the treachery of Macbeth's murder.
Macbeth didn't kill a Tyrant, but a kind and just King.
Has two sons - Malcolm and Donaldbain
When Duncan is murdered, both sons fear that they might be implicated in their father's death.
Both sons flee the country, and begin raising armies.
Malcolm
Duncan's son.
After father dies, he fears that him and his brother might have been implicated in their father's death.
Flees the country and begins raising an army.
Successfully restored to high rightful place on the Throne of Scotland.
Just ruler - "...by the grace of Grace."
Proving divine right to rule.
Donaldbain
Duncan's son.
After father dies, he fears that him and his brother might have been implicated in their father's death.
Flees the country and begins raising an army.
Almost all female characters are villainous.
Lady Macbeth.
The Witches.
Hecate.
Exception - Lady Macduff.
Wife to Macduff (Thane of Fife).
Strong, and openly questions her husband's decisions.
Agreeing with her son that Macduff was a ''traitor''.
Motherly figure.
Worries for her son - ''poor prattler'' and ''poor bird''.
Her son is killed in Act 4, Scene 2, on Macbeth's orders.
Presumed that she is killed off-stage.
