CHAPTER 6
Complex Machines
-
a machine is a group of mechanisms that do work, working parts of machine, can change input force to output force
changing one force to another force, the mechanism gives us a mechanical advantage to multiply effort
machines can be complex, include: inclined plane, wedges, screw lever, wheel & axle & pulley
machines help by: changing effort to move a load (wheelbarrow), changing speed of output (gears on a bicycle) & changing direction of output (eggbeater)
-
1. Incline Plane
-
rather use ramp to lift something instead of lifting it straight up, use less force

4. Gears
-
a gear attached to input axle is driver gear, as it turns the driven gear turns with it, it's meshed
gear being turned is driven gear, attached to output axle
2. The Wedge
-
when moved up or down, force is exerted along sides, perpendicular to inclined surface, push things apart (axe cuts wood, wood splits into two pieces)
3. Wheel & Axle
can't have wheel without axle, work together
