Stock market went into a tailspin when the construction began
All building projects were paused, except the Empire State Building
Required 4000 workers and 50.000 pieces of steel
The heads of the construction company promised to finish the project within 18 months
Most of the components were prefabricated to save up space

Because of the crisis the building only had a few tenants

In July 1945 during WW2 a bomber crashed into the building

Two days later the building has been reopened
