Set & Props
Nursery Scene
Type - Flood shines DS from behind the scrim => Makes scrim transparent, allowing set to suddenly appear and vanish, scaring the audience
Size - Furniture is rather large in comparison to Kipps => Conveys Kipps' powerlessness (Pathos) and the sheer power of the WIB (Fear)
Covering - Set is covered to act as tombstones in the Church scene => Allows multilocation to be effectively established. Furnature to act as tombstone could suggests how Nathanial is dead and now a ghost => Foreshadow supernatural presence.
Interaction with Lighting - Cold blue wash (Overwhelming and omnipresent spirit) used to light stage while Kipps comments on temperature => Allows audience to experience what Kipps is feeling => Shared fear. Moreover, cold blue connotes lack of warmth and light => Highlight how Kipps is isolated but also the supernatural presence in the room => Fear
Relationship to setting - Use of old wooden furnature and old children toys establishes the time period of the piece as Victorian but also the age of Nathanial
Condition - Room is seen in perfect condition and tidy => Anachronistic considering haunting of the house and chaotic events previously. Incongruous set creates tension and suspense for the audience. Moreover, neatness suggests that the room is being cared for despite the isolated setting of Eel Marsh House and house Kipps is isolated => Foreshadow supernatural presence and creates tension subsequently
Type - Scrim used as a back wall to project gobo of Eel Marsh House onto => Establishes location but lack of detail on gobo connotes cartoon image => False image of safety/innocence that is shattered as the plot progresses
Opening Scene
Type - Scrim => Diffuses light => Creates physical barrier between Kipps and audience (Pathos). Also, diffusion of light creates a ghostly effect. Suggests supernatural nature of Eel Marsh House (Haunted rooms are behind the scrim). Slit in Scrim SR - Suggests a gateway between supernatural and reality => foreshadow supernatural presences throughout play and also beyond 4th wall
Type - Costume rack that is visible to audience => Brechtian technique => Reminder that audience is watching a performance (False sense of safety). Verfrumsdungseffekt VS Intimate audience-actor relationship => Confuse audience and intensify fear and reflect lack of rationality of Kipps.
Type - 3 Metal pans => Used to 'catch water' during the performance => Reminder we are watching a performance
Colour - Monochromatic => Reflects Victorian time period but also echoes Gothic genre. Lack of colour creates an ominous atmosphere
SL of Catwalk - Steps leading into the stall => Creates physical bridge between audience and stage => Further intensifies intimate actor-audience relationship and heightens fear and tension.
SR of Catwalk - Steps leading down into orchestra pits => Creates sense of mystery due to no established location of beneath the stage. When WIB descends below stage, creates tension due to lack of knowledge where she will appear whilst also suggesting her control over the whole theatre due to her ability to traverse throughout it in its entirety.
General
Minimalistic Set - Allows locations to be easily established through other production elements whilst also echoing the initial location of the play as an empty rehearsal space
Proscenium Arch with Apron Catwalk projection - Proscenium arch => Suggests distance between Audience and Actor yet Apron projection creates intimate actor-audience relationship => Intensifies feelings of fear, foreshadow break in status quo (Tension) but also extends horror beyond 4th wall => Suggests that the 'horror' of the performance will persist after the show. 'Real' haunting?
Raked Stage - Used to show power and authority of characters (Kipps downstage at opening or WIB ascending raked stage in Church). Also, slanted stage could foreshadow the uneven course of events and the tragic twist at the end - how the plot does play out like expected
Pea souper - Creates seamless bridge between stage and audience => Intensifies fear felt by audience and allows us to share in the fear of Kipps. Also hides feet => creates sense that characters are floating => reinforces view of supernatural. Reinforce Genre and also establishes location of performance in the stalls thus breaking the 4th wall
Train Scene
Type - Wicker basket used as the train seats => Establishes action of a journey whilst the symbolic use of props highlights the non-naturalism of the performance and how the audience is watching a play in a play, utilising the props in the bare rehearsal space.
Scrim used as back wall to project gobo of train windows onto => Further establishes location but Non-Naturalistically => Reminder that audience is watching a play
Other
WIB Stood on staircase USC behind scrim => Shows her overarching power and dominance throughout the play.
