D2 - Digestion
-
Gastric Juices
Secreted by the exocrine glands - secrete through a duct onto the an epithelial surface, ie. surface of the body or lumen of the gut (eg. digestive glands)
-
Gastric glands - secretes gastric juices which includes hydrochloric acid and proteases (breaks down protein)
Pancreatic glands - secretes pancreatic juices which include lipase, protease and amylase
Bile - created in the liver and delivered to the small intestine via the gall bladder (emulsify lipids)
-
Control of its secretion
Nerves/reflex reaction - sight or smell of food stimulates the brain to send nerve impulses to parietal cells, which respond by secreting acid
-
The expansion of stomach detected by stretch receptors in the stomach lining --> triggers the medulla oblongata to send a message through the nerve --> increase the production of gastric juice to digest and produces gastrin
-

Structure
-
Exocrine gland cells
-
Identified by the large amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and secretory vesicles
Fibre and feces
Dietary fibres (eg. cellulose) are not absorbed or digested, thus pass through the small and large intestine to be egested and sometimes can be seen on feces
