Key Terms 4.3 and 4.4
Atherosclerosis
A disease of the arteries characterized by the deposition of plaques of fatty material on their inner walls.
LDL
A reading between 200 and 239 mg/dL is considered borderline high and a reading of 240 mg/dL and above is considered high.
Angioplasty
Surgical repair or unblocking of a blood vessel, especially a coronary artery.
Risk factors
A risk factor is any attribute, characteristic or exposure of an individual that increases the likelihood of developing a disease or injury.
Stent insertion
Stents are inserted into narrowed coronary arteries to help keep them open after balloon angioplasty. The stent then allows the normal flow of blood and oxygen to the heart.

HDL
High density lipoprotein cholesterol. Lipoproteins, which are combinations of fats (lipids) and proteins, are the form in which lipids are transported in the blood.
Cholesterol
A compound of the sterol type found in most body tissues. Cholesterol and its derivatives are important constituents of cell membranes and precursors of other steroid compounds, but a high proportion in the blood of low-density lipoprotein
Heart disease
Cardiovascular disease generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain or stroke.

An X-ray photograph of blood or lymph vessels, made by angiography.
