Exam 3 Review
Work: action done on an object that displaces the object
Work Done by variable force: meaning that force changes with position
Solution: take the integral because answer is the area underneath graph
W=Fd* Cos O
Scalar (NOT VECTOR!) do not know direction in which it is done
Energy
Mechanical Energy is K.E.+P.E.
Potential Energy (U): Deals with objects Position
Elastic/Spring
Uel= 1/2
k
x^2
Gravitational: above ground
Ug=mgh
Kinetic Energy: Object has a speed
K=1/2
m
v^2
1st Law of Thermodynamics
when heat is added to a system, some of that energy stays in the system and some leaves. The energy that leaves does work on the area around it. Energy that stays in the system creates an increase in the internal energy of the system.
2nd Law of Thermodynamics
no reaction is 100% efficient; some energy in a reaction is always lost to heat; a system cannot convert all of its energy to working energy; If heat is going to move from cooler to warmer areas, it is going against what is “natural”, so the system must put in some work for it to happen.
