Morcar's Resentment

Odo of Bayeux and William FitzOsbern were reported to have seized land unlawfully and allowed their soldiers to rape their Anglo-Saxon women without punishment during their vice regency .

William promised Edwin could marry his daughter, but then went back on his word. William did allow Edwin to keep his earldom however he made it much smaller and less important.

Odo and FitzOsbern's land grabs were repeated all over the country, with William's followers seeking to expand at every opportunity.

Castles were resented wherever they appeared as they were a symbol of Norman domination and the centre of control over an area. Castle-building in towns also meant the clearance of dozens sometimes hundreds of homes.

William's heavy geld ax in December 1066 was resented greatly. It became evident to Anglo-Saxon earls that William planned to use the English wealth for the good of Normandy and would not benefit them.

Morcar's earldom was also reduced in size. William granted the northern part of Northumbria to Tostig's old thegn,Copsi who showed William true submission.King Harold's former steward was granted control over parts of Yorkshire and loss of land meant loss of money and power.

When William was informed, he took his forces north building castles as they went. William went to Warwick first which is a key city in Mercia, then to Nottingham to build.

Edwin and Morcar were quick to surrender as soon as William had established control in Warwick. The citizens of York sent William hostages to show their obedience as soon as Nottingham had fallen, followed quickly by the Northumbrian rebels.

Edwin and Morcar fled from Willliam's Court , went up north and were joined by many others in the rebellion against William, all protesting about his tyranny and injustice.

Edgar fled north to Scotland, where Malcolm III took him in ; the others begged William for forgiveness.
