Properties of Mechanical Waves
Frequency and Period
Periodic Motion: Motion that repeats at regular intervals.
Period: The complete time for a wave cycle.
Frequency: Number of complete cycles in a given time.
Wavelength
The distance between the highest point of each wave.
Long Wavelength
Short Wavelength
Wave Speed
The measure of time of one wavelength.
Amplitude
The highest displacement of a wave from its rest position.
High Amplitude
Low Amplitude
Types of Mechanical Waves
Transverse Waves
A wave that causes the medium to vibrate perpendicular to the wave.
Longitudinal Waves
A wave which medium's vibrates parallel top the wave.
This wave's compression is centered.
This wave's compression is at the end.
Surface Waves
A wave that travels along a surface separating two media.
This wave's crest brings up the bobber.
This wave's crest bring the bobber down.
