Mango street = the time esperanza spent in her home town
LOFT = the time the boys spent on the island
in each book the factor of time changes the character
E makes up her mind that she will leave mango street and breaks free of her expectations (over time and experiences)
The boys over time change into a group of savages
the boys sense of loyalty shifts towards Jack when he shown them the power he has and the expectations he has for himself and the tribe to come
The boys take actions in the book like not putting their hair back so the fallow the expectation of being masculine
even after being on an island to the point of savagery the boys still some of the boys still fallow the expectation of being masculine
in the book E has a general sense of things that were wrong or off to her and that sense gets more acquit through out the book

during LOTF at some point the statement is said that the boys were expected to do better
at the start they had basic expectations ( get fire wood help around the lagoon )
