key features
Departments: In Unit 1 we identified different departments and their roles. Can you define what each of them do? If not look back and remind yourself. The departments in the example above are Marketing, Finance, Operations and HRM (Human Resource Management).
Hierarchy: A hierarchy is an order of who has the most authority, in the above example the Managing Director has the most authority. The Marketing Director, Finance Director, Operations Director and HRM Director all have the same amount of authority but are below the Managing Director and above the managers and employees.
Chain of command: This is how communication occurs within a business, tasks are passed down from the top of the hierarchy and often information is fed back up the hierarchy.
Delegation: Someone higher up the hierarchy can give responsibility to or delegate authority to someone to perform a task.
Span of control: The span of control shows how many
individuals or subordinates are under the control of one manager.
