Kelman - SIDS
Too much focus on hazards of Climate change
Focus on Climate Change can de-politicise developmental problems
Migration not necessarily because of Climate Change
Natural Hazards are nothing new
Social injustice - Poverty - Security lead to people no longer seeing a life in the SIDS
More focus on vulnerability to all hazards and political roots
More focus on other developmental issues
Poor Access to Resources
Exploitation
Inequity
Marginalisation
Importance of "Build Back Better"
Must be done with Community Involvement But power structures can prohibit this
So build back better due to Climate Change can positively change other development issues such as unequal power structures
New location must be built less vulnerable to all hazards
In new SIDS communities problems besides Climate Change must be addressed
Dilemma of Disaster Preparedness
Unforeseen/surprise events
Reacting to disasters more rewarded than preventing them
We tend to blame Climate change OR vulnerability, need to focus on both
Lack of risk awareness and short memories of people
A disaster far away can still affect you (tsunami was the biggest swedish disaster)
