The heart
Major vessels
Heart: The heart is made up from cardiac muscle and pumps blood around the body. There are a number of blood vessels associated with the heart.

Coronary arteries: Branch from the aorta and take blood to the muscle of the heart. The heart muscle needs its own capillary supply for rapid delivery of oxygen.
Circulatory system

Mass flow

Closed systems are tubes that contain liquids and are more efficient than open systems because generating and maintaining a pressure gradient is easier.
The blood pressure is much lower in the veins so when the heart contracts the blood flows through the artery (high pressure) down the pressure gradient to the veins.
The lymphatic system
-
Is used when there is an excess of tissue fluid. The lymphatic system drains the fluid and transports it somewhere where the pressure is lower.
However too much fluid can cause blockages in the lymphatic system leading to bad swelling around joints
