2.Adding behavior to the safety equation
BBS as the solution
keep in mind: all components of safety system are necessary
effective safety training
safety procedures
timely audits ans inspections
! procedures are followed and behaviors from training occur
BBS builds on what you are already doing in safety by providing a
systematic
and
positive
way to ensure that everyone does his/her part to build a safe workplace through individual and group behavior, including the crucial support behaviors of management.
Objectives of BBS
ultimate goal = reduce and eliminate injuries
safe habits at the frontline level, but also management and other employees
increase the number of safe behaviors of all employees. Create
safe habits
(do the safe thing consistently and automatically)
direct safe behaviors & indirect safe behaviors
direct= what you do tot keep yourself and your immediate peers safe
indirect= management decosions about PPE's, dallying repairs, providing training ...
BBS process = all of these behaviors
→
frontline worker
: direct safe behaviors (e.g. bending your knees when lifting),
frontline supervisor or team leader:
few direct behaviors and certainly indirect behaviors (e.g. discussing safety to make it a priority),
senior manager
: exclusively indirect behaviors (e.g. allocating resources)
! direct
≠
intentional
Observations
BBS is not about catching people doing unsafe things and reporting that to mgmt.
observation component (often makes people nervous)
all data is group-oriented and observations are anonymous
collect data on how frequently groups of people are behaving safely
safety team member collect group score, frontline groups not mgmt. handle observation data
giving people a voice and an active role in their own well-being at work
BBS is about checking to see how good people already are, working with them to improve, and then recognizing and celebrating that improvement every step of the way
Summary
Observations are used as a means of collecting
data
in BBS. These
observations
are anonymous and used to provide meaningful feedback and positive reinforcement for all employees.
Hundreds of companies in a wide variety of industries have used this
BBS
process
success
fully.
The overarching
goal
of any safety process, including BBS, is to reduce or eliminate injuries. BBS achieves this goal by increasing the number of safe habits of all employees and ensuring important support, or indirect behaviors, on the part of management.
