PROBLEM STATEMENT: How can the livelihoods of the tribal artisans of Kalahandi be improved by leveraging opportunities within the artisanal handicraft market?
Role of women: what is their role? what do they do during the day? do they want to learn/do they have time?
Resistance to change, belief in self-sufficiency
SHARING INFORMATION: would the community be receptive? would it be engaging? ex. pictures would they be more invested if they were given samples of what they could make
How did artisanal production start out? To create homewares for themselves or for pleasure? To make more money?
-
Benefits of engaging women: better utilization of the workforce/sense of belonging and agency/provides a way for women to be self-sufficient (esp. in a one-parent household)
-
Consistency, see artisanal goods as a supplementary measure for income, sticking to the status quo, tradition
Why is artisanal production not seen as more of a necessity? Have they been exposed to higher production and was it not lucrative or have they just not tried to expand their production yet? How far along are farmers to turning away from agriculture to pursue other economic means? How important is it to maintain tradition - is there flexibility to move away from it?
-
Looking at lifestyle/work habits: whatever potential approach, how will it fit in to this more irregular work day/lifestyle? how do we leveraging this? can we leverage the entertainment aspect of pottery - something outside of work?
Uncertainty, powerless, resigned, mindset barrier
-
Younger adults move away, not as invested in tradition, see artisanal production as a short-term product, not as much investment into it
Sustainability by inspiring younger generations, opportunity for the women of the family, providing a reason to learn a new/uncertain skill
What jobs are younger generations going into? Are they leaving/do they want to stay? Are they pursuing further/more schooling than before?

Artisanal buyers: Where are they buying? What are they buying? Who are they buying from? Who is buying? How often?
Where is excess supply going? Hotels, boutique store, is it sufficient to continue on selling to current markets or do we need to find other markets?
-
ASSUMPTION: In its current state, artisanal production can only be sold to its current market and wouldn't have a lot of value outside of that community?
-
How to engage different parts of the community considering their lifestyle? Women, youth.

-
What other activities happen in this community to support livelihoods other than artisan production and agriculture? Anything else to leverage in this community?
