Chapter 9: Assessment for Distance Education
(Simonson et. al, 2015)
Purpose for Assessment
Assessment is, "the process of measuring, documenting, and interpreting behaviors that demonstrate learning" (Simonson et. al, 2015).
Some administrative reasons for assessment are program evaluation/improvement, facilitation of student placement in programs, justification for funding priorities, and reporting of trends to relevant entities (Simonson et. al, 2015).
In the academic environment, assessment can be used to compare the performance of distance education students with face to face students (Simonson et. al, 2015).
One of the most important reasons for assessment is to provide feedback to learners and teachers (Simonson et. al, 2015).
Assessments are regularly used to provide evidence of learning outcomes for institutional requirements and regulations (Simonson et. al, 2015).
The most common form of assessment, however, is to allow the instructor to assign grades in order to pass or fail students at the end of a unit or chapter (Simonson et. al, 2015).

Reflections
In any type of instruction, assessment is necessary for a variety of reasons. As instructors, it's imperative to understand if the material is landing with students if the approach is the appropriate one for the audience. Additionally, assessment helps to refine the course and better serve students. Assessment should be required for all courses because as the field of education evolves, so will the way educators interact with students either face to face or online.
