      - Tertiary: Only 30% of infections enter this stage; can last for 20 yrs. or longer; can have many complications in susceptible tissues & organs; neural, cardiovascular symptoms & gummas (soft, non-cancerous growths) develop
      - Primary: Appearance of hard chancre (painless ulcer) at site of inoculation (genitals); chancre heals spontaneously
      - Congenital/Transplacental: Marked by nasal discharge, skin eruptions, bone deformation & nervous system abnormalities
