Testing which material is waterproof.
RESULTS - each child filled in their own, individual worksheet.
Method one results
Group one predicted the bin bag and kitchen roll to be the most waterproof. After carrying out the experiment the results for this group was bin bags. All the children filled in there worksheet and noticed that the bin bag was the waterproof material.
Method two results
This group did the second method. Just like the group before I got the children to observe the materials and then got them to fill in the worksheet. This group predicted the bin bag, tin foil and fabric. After completing the experiment the children filled in what they observed as waterproof. Three children ticked bin bag while one observed tin foil as the most waterproof.
Method three results
The group with method three predicted the kitchen roll and the tin foil. Their worksheets show tin foil as the most waterproof. Three out of the group did predict tin foil as the most waterproof and then observed tin foil as waterproof and then therefore recorded it on the worksheet
Method four results
The group with the last method predicted all of them being waterproof. Each child predicted a different material being waterproof. After the experiment two recorded tin foil as waterproof and two predicted fabric as waterproof. The fabric used was a lot thicker and the amount of time the water on the fabric was not enough for the children to see the water going through.
PROCESS SKILLS
Communication
This process skill was used the most often during the experiment. The children were communicating verbally, with me and their peers, and communicated non verbally by recording their prediction and results on worksheets. These worksheets were used to generate the results for this research.
Predicting
Predicting is the structured process skills which was used by the children in the experiment. The children were introduced the materials. After observing the materials the children made predictions. Once they predicted they verbally told each other and non verbally ticked, on the worksheet, near the material they though was going to be waterproof.
Observing
Observing was done through out the experiment. This process skill are the "fundamental skills [that] begin in infancy". (Tunnicliffe, D,S., 2013) Inferring from this the children are developing the observing skill now. The children are always observing. In this experiment the children critically observed the experiment. The children observed the materials before making the predictions then the children observed the results - which material was waterproof and which was not.
Categorising
The children used this process skill of categorising at the end of the experiment when they wrote the results down and discussed which materials were waterproof and which were not. Some did this verbally while some ticked all the waterproof materials on their worksheets.
