Digital Natives/Immigrants Debate
Digital Natives = have been born in a time when digital technology was readily available from early on in life
They are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach
Think and process information fundamentally different from their predecessors
Give precedence to graphics over text
Cannot and will not go back to the traditional ways of thinking and learning
Education today relies on the assumption that learners are the same as they ever were
Traditional education cannot meet the needs and inclinations of digital immigrants
This is no longer a valid assumption
Our education system needs to adapt to suit digital natives in content and methodology
Legacy content: things that are still considered important (i.e. reading, writing, maths and logic
Future content: digital and technological content
The switch from older to newer methods of teaching that actually suit digital natives is happening more readily
Digital Immigrants = those not born in a time when digital technology was not readily available at all times and have had to learn how to use it over time
A lot of teachers are digital immigrants
Digital natives get bored of immigrants old-fashioned teaching styles
With some effort, digital immigrants are able to connect with digital natives
Teachers simply have to cope with the fact that their students are digital natives
Can be hard to convince digital immigrants of the usefulness of digital technologies
Even when they learn to use digital technologies, immigrants still retain an 'accent' and talk in an outdated language, compared to natives
I consider myself as a digital native as I have grown up just as digital technology became massively available, if anything, I consider myself to be part of the first generation of digital natives
I prefer to learn using digital tools when I can, as it means that I generally only need to bring my laptop or phone + chargers, headphones, cables etc. to class, but generally it is a lot less materially-intensive as say carrying around a bag full of pens and paper
