"And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan and the captive"

There are rigorous rules about evidence needed in order for corporal punishment to be carried out, but they are often ignored
Some Muslims say corporal punishment is too severe and still respect the human rights of the prisoners
Some are against community service as they believe it's too easy and doesn't stop people from reoffending
Reasons for crime
Poverty - Poor people may resort to stealing in order to sustain themselves or they might sell illegal goods in order to earn money
Upbringing - If people have had a troubled childhood they may commit crime or if they’ve grown up around it
Mental Illness - They may not fully understand between right and wrong or legal and illegal. It may also be easier for them to be influenced into doing it
-
-
Hate - A person could be driven by prejudice or if someone has done something bad to them they may seek revenge
-
Lawbreaking
There are different types of crime, such as murder, theft and hate crimes
-
-
-
-
-
"And the heavens declare His righteousness, For God Himself is judge."
Christian Punishment
Christians believe prisoners have the right to be treated fairly and many of them want better prison conditions and often visit prisoners themselves

-
-
-
Forgiveness
-
-
If they leave prison isolated with no job or prospects they could feel their only option is to reoffend
-
-
-
Restorative justice - Where the offender may meet with the victim(s), it helps them release the damage they've done so they can try and make it up and also can stop reoffending
Christian Evil
The parable of the sheep and goats says that people will be judged and separated into the sheep (good) and the goats (bad)
Jesus said helping another person is like helping him, and if you ignore someone in need then it's like ignoring him
"...whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me"

Punishment
Depending on the severity of the crime, different sentences are given
Corporal punishment is punishment through physical pain, it is not carried out in Europe but it is elsewhere
Prisoners have human rights still, so people say corporal punishment goes against that
-
Religious people favour community service as it allows people to pay their debt to society and still lead a normal life
-
Islam Evil
They teach Allah is merciful and those who have done good will be rewarded but those who have done bad will be punished
If people intend to do good then that will help them on the day of judgement but if people intend to do bad, even if it turns out good, it will go against them on the day of judgement
"He admits whom He wills into his mercy; But the wrongdoers - he has a painful punishment prepared for them"
Many believe Iblis, the devil, tries to make humans evil
Aims of punishment
Retribution
This is revenge against the criminal, it's a way of making them pay for what they have done
-
Protection
This punishment should protect society if the criminal is dangerous, like imprisonment
-
Reformation
This should aim to change criminals so they don't reoffend, which shows the idea no one is inherently bad
-
-
Deterrence
If this punishment is bad enough then it will put people off for the future so they understand the consequences
People argue that criminals don't stop and think before committing crimes, especially if under substance influence
-
Islam Death Penalty
The Qur'an outlines crimes punishable by death but encourages the victims family to take compensation
Three cases where death is a punishment "the married adulterer, a life for a life, and the deserter of his Din (Islam)"
-
For the Death Penalty
-
Once a murderer is dead they cannot kill again, imprisoned murderers may order killings from jail or reoffend while on parole
Utilitarianism - The best course of action balances good and bad, the killing of criminals is bad for them but good for a majority of society
