Weapons. equipment - at the beginning of the war most soldiers were armed with a rifle and a bayonet but as the war grew new weapons were made including rifle-grenades, grenades and many types of machine guns.
-
Where
Where did they fight? - The 6th infantry batallion fought in multple places during world war one. it was formed in victoria and left heere heading to albany WA for a uick stop and then continued to Egypt arriving on december 2nd. It took part in the ANZAC landing, transferrred to Cape Helles to help with the attack on the village of Krithia whiere they lost a lot of soldiers for minimal benefit. They then returned to Egypt. In march 1916 the battallion sailed for France to fight on the western front, mainly against Germany Army. They then fought in some other places around france before going to belgium and then going back to a few other places.

What were their living conditions like - the living conditions in the trenches were terrible. With filthy rats and lice constantly around diseases spread like wildfire. The trenches were almost always damp and that meant that soldiers were particularly susceptible to trench foot, which in some cases led to amputation. There was plenty of food for each person however the conditions it was kept in wasn't great. The of course there was the ever-present fear of being killed by shells or bombs that could go off at any moment and living amongst men you knew could die any day. Because of the constant dampness of the trenches, diseases like trench foot flourished as the open wounds could not properly heal in a dry place and were always raw and open.

Why
Why did they leave they families - they thought it was their duty. i don't think they would have liked to leave their families, if they had ones, but they were offered stable wages and the a change of scenery from their usual jobs may have sounded appealing to men at that time. I don't think they wanted to leave their family, but i think in their minds it might have not have been such a big thing if they thought they could return. If they got conscripted then its a different story. i'd imagine they really didn't want to go then and they definitely din't choose to leave then.
Why did they choose to fight in the war - at the beginning there was a lot of social pressure to go and fight. you would be seen as brave and honorable for fighting for your country. fit young men that were not in uniform would get given white feathers by girls/women to show their cowardice. They may have thought that war would be different and exciting compared to their lives in australia as typical business men. And when conscription was introduced then they didn't have a choice, they had to go whether they liked it or not.
Why did they feel like they had to fight - there was a lot of propoganda about war detailing how glamorous it was and how men could be heroes if they fought for their country. A lot of men saw it as a a way to prove themselves and be manly and honor their country so they signed up to fight. i suppose they didn't quite know how severe world war 1 was going to be at the very beginning when the first few soldiers signed up.
