Catalysts
-
How do they work?
- Bonds in the reactants break and bond with the catalyst by chemisorption
- Each atoms forms a bond with the other reactant to form the products
- Reactant ADsorb onto the surface of the catalyst held by intermolecular bonds on active sites
- Product is formed and held on the surface until it DEsorbs
- Reactants collide with the surface of the catalyst
Efficiency factors
Surface area- Higher the surface area the higher the no of active sites on surface of the catalyst and is more efficient
Pressure- if all of the active sites are saturated already then pressure doesn't affect the efficiency
Temperature- an increase in temp increases efficiency of catalyst as more particles have required EA (see Maxwell Boltzmann distribution)
