The Great Purge was also known as the Great Terror. It was a period of persecution and oppression in the Soviet Union in the late 1930s. It is characterized by imprisonments and executions of Communist leaders, party members, members of the Red Army, and the Intelligentsia. Enemies of the people were charged with treason, wrecking, and espionage. Also persecution against favoritisms, bullied subordinates, people who made own "cults of personality." and inappropriate use of state funds.
