Theories of Leadership
-
-
Trait Theory - leadership can be learned - so which traits should we pursue to lead effectively? too many in the end!!
Contingency - no one size fits all - describes relationships between L-style and specific situations
Path-Goal - style needed depends on employees personality/attitudes, and task structure - directive/participative/achievement/supportive
-
Situational - style in relation to readiness of employees - delegate/participate/coach/direct (1-way comm for new staff)
Feidlers CT - suitability of L style determined by whether situation is favourable or unfavourable (leader-member rel, task structure and leader position
-
Level 5 - Highest level in a hierarchy - transforms good orgs to great ones...humility is key characteristic here
Servant - more ethical leadership, transcends self interest, serves staff/org/society, subordinate own needs
Authentic - know oneself, aspire and enact ethical values and empower others to be true to beliefs, inspire trust and commitment, passion and purpose, hearts and minds
Leader-Member Exchange - leaders form trusting relations with some 'members' and not others and this affects their behaviours

-
Great Man Theory - leaders are born - not made - find those attributes and they will be good leaders!!
