Main operating systems
Windows
Most personal computers in the world today run using a version of Windows. It was developed by Microsoft and uses a graphical user interface. There are versions of Windows which are designed for servers but there are other alternative operating systems for servers which many companies use.
MacOS
Mac OS is used by Apple computers and recent developments means that it now works extremely well with cloud computing.
UNIX
UNIX is a command-line operating system mostly found on expensive large servers. It is robust and very secure but not very user friendly and requires specialist users to be able to operate it.
LINUX
Linux is known as “open-source” which means that anyone can have access to the source code and change it to meet their particular needs and is becoming popular for running servers.

Andriod
Android is become a popular operating system for mobile phone technology. It is not linked with Apple products so many of the other manufacturers are using an Android operating system. Android is owned by the Google company.
Security
The operating system must not only allow different processes and user to use the system but it must prevent them from clashing or the wrong user gaining access to another user’s private files.
It does this by dividing memory into sections and keeping a log of which users and processes are using each page to prevent conflicts.

Utility Programs
Utilities programs are small programs which perform a limited function to help the computer system run smoothly and securely and are specifically designed to help the end-user manage and tune the computer hardware and software. Utilities programs are usually installed at the same time as the operating system. However, some users also add additional utilities software as well.
