Bacterial Shapes & Sizes
Shapes
2. Bacillus/Rod
-Bacterial cells that are cylindrical
-Can be blocky, spindle-shaped, round-ended, long & threadlike, or clubbed/drumstick-shaped
-Coccobacillus = Short & plump rod
-Vibrio = Gently curved rod
-
1. Coccus/Round
-Bacterial cells w/ a spherical/round shape
-Can be perfect spheres, ovals, bean-shaped, or pointed variants
Arrangement
Cocci -Can divide in many planes to form pairs, chains, packets and clumps-Planes can be:
- Single (Forms pairs & chains)
- Double-perpendicular (Forms tetrads)
- Multiple-intersectional (Forms packets & clumps)
-After division, the resultant daughter cells remain attached
-
-
Bacilli
-Only capable of dividing in the transverse plane
-Can be single cells, a pair of cells w/ their ends attached, or a chain/palisade of several cells if they remain attached to one another
-Cells tend to fold back upon each other, forming a row of cells oriented side by side
