Scope management
-
Scope definition is the first goal of Planning process.
Scope starts with goals and objectives (SMART)
Deliverables: measurable results & outcomes. (goal is accomplished when deliverables are completed)
Requirements: specs or characteristics of the deliverables
Assumptions are events or actions believed to be true: key project member's availability, vendor delivery times
Triples constrains: scope, time, budget
-
WBS: a work breakdown structure is a deliverable-oriented grouping of the work involved in a project that defines the total scope of the project
The WBS is a document that breaks all the work required for the project into discrete tasks, and groups those tasks into a logical hierrrchy
3 WBS formats: Free format, Indented Format, Org. chart format
Work packages: "a deliverable...at the lowest level of each branch of a WBS. The work package includes the schedule activities and schedule milestones required to complete the work package deliverable."
- An element at the lowest level
- The basis for all subsequent planning and control activities
- The point from which: work activities are defined; schedule is formed; resources are aligned; control features will be developed
WBS org examples: Project Phase, Design Components, Work Function
