Visitors: sealers, whalers, penguin hunters from different parts of the world.
1771-1811 Spanish presence in Puerto Soledad (exPort Louis). They leave the island because South American colonies were in a state of revolt against Spain.
1816: a Buenos Aires privateer claims the Falkland islands, unauthorised act, never reported to Buenos Aires goverment. No occupation.
1825: Britain and the Government of Buenos Aires sign: TREATY OF AMITY, TRADE AND NAVITAGION. No reference is made to the Falkland islands.
1826: Louis Vernet from Buenos Aires: private venture to Puerto Soledad (Falkland).
1829: Buenos Aires appoints Vernet unpaid Commander, claims all rights previously held by Spain. Britain protests, sovereignity.
1831: Vernet seizes American sealing ships to control fishing there, the US sloop "Lexington" destroys Puerto Soledad and proclaims the islands "FREE OF ALL GOVERNMENT".
1832: Buenos Aires sends Commander Mestivier (with garrison and convicts), he was killed by his own men.
1833: Captain Onslow in the warship "Clio" reclaims the islands for Britain.
1845: Stanley officially becomes the capital of the islands. Colonial Secretary Geoffrey Smith Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby. Settlements and farms on the island.
1914: Battle of Falkland Islands, WWI, British victory secures Cape Hore passage.
2009: New Constitution: enhanced democracy, internal self-government, self-determination.
2013: Referendum with international observers. Islanders vote to determine their future, 99.8% vote YES to continue as BRITISH OVERSEAS TERRITORY.

1770 The Spanish Government protests about the French settlement. 1771 Serious diplomatic negotiations involving Britain, Spain and France produce the EXCHANGE OF DECLARATIONS whereby Port Egmond is restored to Britain.

1967: The Falkland islands Emergency Commitee. Islanders' interests are more important.
1982: Argentina invades the Falkland islands. Occupy the islands for 10 weeks before being defeated by the British. 14/6 Liberation Day.
1990 Diplomatic relations with Argentina are restored.
