How can climate change be managed
Alternate energy recourses
The burning of fossil fuels account for 87% of carbon dioxide emissions
Alternative sources of energy include solar energy, hydroelectric power, nuclear power, wind power, and tidal power
Carbon Capture
Carbon capture uses technology to capture carbon dioxide that is released from burning fossil fuels.
Once captured, the carbon dioxide is compressed and injected underground for long-term storage.
Not yet economically viable
Planting trees
Trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis
They also release moisture which produces more cloud that stops more solar radiation from entering the atmosphere
Plantations are more effective at absorbing carbon dioxide than natural forests
International Agreements
The Paris Agreement (2015) was the first legally binding global climate deal
It aims to limit global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels
Global Impacts of climate change
Reduced crop yields and water supplies
More heat-related illnesses and disease
Low-lying coastal areas threatened by flooding
Changing ecosystems and natural habitats
More extreme weather events such as droughts and floods
Stronger tropical storms
Desertification
