Causes of development gap
Historic
colonialism has harmed many countries
has created conflicts that still go on today
when colonialism ended
countries gained independence
independence caused problems
very few educated people in country
power vacuum to control government (if present) and natural resources.
Gold
Diamond
Gas/Oil
CONFILCTS
conflicts happened everywhere:
Africa
Asia
Middle East
when the Europeans drew up borders between countries they did not fit in well with the distribution of ethic groups which lead to conflict
5 million deaths can be linked to this problem in Africa alone
Conflict in Syria that started in 2012 has displaced over six million people who now live in refugee camps
90% of these children do not have an education and are not receiving one
Physical
Coastland
being landlocked means that you can do trade with other countries easily as there are no ports for large ships
Natural hazards
natural hazards can also hinder development dramatically as vital infrastructure can be destroyed in a matter of minutes
Climate
For countries with poor climate such as hot deserts - development can really be hindered
economic
TNC's nowadays buy raw materials and from LIC's and NEE's to sell to the HIC's
These products and produce have extreme low prices
WTO has not put in place fair terms for global trade for food and raw materials allowing TNC's to exploit them
Corruption within LIC's has lead to raw materials being sold cheaply away to TNC's for personal gain
Food prices fluctuate causing slow development
