Codes in History
In WW2, the US and the Allied forces used a code known as ¨Magic¨. This helped them communicate without getting caught by the Axis powers.
During the Civil War, a man named Joseph W. Ely of the Union wrote a diary in code. His code was called Freemason Cipher and cam be deciphered now days.
In Rome, Julius Caesar used a code now called Caesar shift to send out battle plans to his army. It is a simple code, but took code breakers back then almost 800 years to crack it!
A code is a system of words, letters, figures, or other symbols substituted for other words, letters, or numbers especially for the purposes of secrecy.
The word Cryptography is Greek, and it means "hidden writing"

Codes and ciphers can be similar, but also have many differences.
Differences
A cipher is the way of encrypting and decrypting a code. Long ago, people confused a cipher and code, and today people still do.
Similarities
They are a mix of words, numbers, and letters, and can not be read with a first glance.
-
If your code can not be deciphered by the reader, or there is a misunderstanding, everything could be messed up.
In order to be considered a code, the code must not contain the real statement being encrypted.
A code must also follow a type of pattern, like for example, if 34 is A, then every time A is mentioned, it must be stated with 34.
