Hypothyroidism - slowing of the metabolic rate (SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS…
Hypothyroidism -
slowing of the metabolic rate
PRIMARY
Destruction of thyroid tissue
Leads to decreased production of thyroid hormone
Increased secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone
Defective hormone synthesis
CAUSE
Atrophy of thyroid gland as an end result of graves disease
Acute Thyroditis
Caused by bacterial infection of the thyroid gland
SECONDARY
Pituitary Disease
Pituitary Tumours
Decreased Thyrotrophin Releasing Hormone (TRH) secretion
TRH - Produced by Hypothalamus
Stimulates the release of TSH and prolactin from the anterior pituitary gland
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Slowing of body processes
Weight gain
Decreased Metabolic Rate
Reduced oxygen demand
Fatigue
Lethargic
Personality and mental changes
altered self-image
Disability
Impaired Memory
Slowed Speech
Pt's may appear depressed
Decreased initative
Decreased cardiac contractility
Decreased Cardiac Output

Changes of subcutaneous tissue apperance
TREATMENT
Hormone Therapy
Thyroid Hormone Replacement
Diet
Low-kilojoule
Prevents weight gain
Increases weight loss
Medication therapy
Levothyroxine
Monitor Cardiac Status
Medication may increase myocardial oxygen demand
resulting in angina and cardiac arrhythmias
