Assessments

Formative
Definition: Assesses a students' performance throughout instruction and usually occurs regularly throughout the lesson
Example 1: Think Pair Share (teacher can walk around classroom to hear students conversations and responses to questions and content)
Example 2: Red & Green Card (students will keep these two different color cards at their desk, when they are understanding the content they will have a green card at their desk and when they need some assistance or don't understand what is going on in the lesson, they will have a red card)

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Evaluates students performance at periodic intervals, frequently at the end of a grading period. This can predict student performance on end of the year assessments.

Example 2: Running Records (you can give students running record assessments to assess their progress in reading and either move them up or down a level)

Performance
Definition: A form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a pre made list
Example 1: Portfolios or Presentations (have students create a presentation or portfolio to show their understanding of content)
Example 2: Demonstrations (have students create demonstrations based on content. They can create how-tos or teach about a certain subject matter to show their class)
Diagnostic
Definition: Assesses the students' strength, weaknesses, knowledge and skills prior to the lesson being taught
Example 1: Mind Map (students make a mind map over the content and put everything they already know about the subject matter)
Example 2: Pre Assessment (create an assessment that has questions about the content that will be presented in the following lesson. Have students take this pre assessment before instruction so teacher can base their instruction off of what the student knows and doesn't know.
