Thar desert
Opportunities
Resources
The Thar desert has valuable reserves of minerals in which are used in India and exported across the world. These include:
Gypsum(building material) -
Feldspar (ceramics) -
Phospherite (making fertilizer) -
Kaolin (paper whitener) -
Energy
Coal
There are expensive lignite coal deposits in parts of the Thar desert and a thermal energy plant has been constructed at Giral
Wind
-
The Jaisalmer Wind park, India's largest wind park was built in 2001
Solar
With the sunny, cloudless skies, it offers ideal conditions for solar power generation.
At Bhaleri it is used in water treatment
-
Tourism
People wan to see the beautiful landscapes, therefore has - become a popular tourist destination.
Tens of thousands visit each year -
Local people benefit by providing food and accommodation and by acting as guides or rearing and looking after the camels. -
Farming
Most people living in the desert are involved in subsistence farming.
They survive in hot and dry conditions by grazing animals on the grassy areas and farming vegetables and fruit
Subsistence farming is the farmers that focus on growing enough food to feed themselves and their entire families

Challenges
Water
the Thar desert has a low annual rainfall rate , high temperature and strong wind causing a higher chance of evaporation : the people living there found water traditionally in ponds and rivers
Transport
due to extreme weather there are very limited roads networks and due to the temperature tarmac can sometimes melt and he wind can blow sand over the roads traditionally people ride camels however public transport is overladen buses
-
adaptions
animals
-many rodents are nocturnal , and survive the extreme heat by living in burrows underground -snakes and lizards retain water by having waterproof skin and producing a small amount of urine
- camels are well adapted to cope with out any water fro days
plants
- some plants tend to have vert thin leaves or spines to reduce water loss and have long roots to reach deep underground water eg cactus
- seeds stay dormant for years , but can germinate quickly when it rains
-small leaves , spines , glossy and waxy leaves all help reduce water loss
- some plants have horizontal root systems just below the surface
climate
temp
the latitudes air that has risen at the equator descends forming a persistence belt of high pressure, which explains the lack of cloud and rain and why temperature drop below freezing at night during winter due to no cloud cover
-
Desertification
Causes
- Droughts
- Poor land management
- Slight changes in temperatures and rainfall can have serious impacts
Over-cultivation resulting from the need to produce more food can lead to the soil becoming exhausted, and will become infertile.
Due to population growth, the land is overgrazed by livestock or stripped of vegetation for firewood. Once exposed to the weather, it will crack and break up. It will then be eroded by wind and water
Desertification is where land gradually turns into desert, usually on the edges of an existing desert.
location of desert
mostly found in dry continental interiors away from coast ,in belt at approximately 30 degrees north and 30 degrees south
