JOHN 2: 13-22
New Interpreters Commentary
VS 14-17
Jesus actions are narrated in one long complex sentence to indicate urgency
This also underscores the intensity of the scene
The sale of animals and changing of coin was necessary in the context -also many would have traveled far without ability now to worship in the CULT context
There was also widespread dishonest financial practice that hurt those coming to worship
Since these practices were needed for the Cultic worship - Jesus is issuing a powerful challenge to the authority of the temple and the worship itself
Making The Whip
VS 18-22
Vs 18-20 - depict Johnannine narrative technique of misunderstanding - The Temple versus Jesus
The Jews only go for the pragmatic understanding - thus underscoring their misunderstanding of the Christ
Jesus use of Temple as Body - alters the concept of God's residence - the Temple building had been thought to be God's only residence - but now Jesus body is the locus of God's interaction with the world.
Vs 21 - Readers realize that Jesus has authority to challenge the temple system - because He is the Locus of God's Authority on earth
REFLECTIONS
Jesus - a complete outsider to the system - issues a challenge to the authority of the temple that quite literally shakes the foundations
Many perceived Jesus as human - just as they were - who was he to derail their worship
Jesus' challenge to the system was not anti Jewish - but - rather anti ANY SYSTEM with institutional misalignment
Jesus challenges any religious system that is so embedded in it's own structures and systems that it is no longer open to a Fresh revelation from God - this point should be well noted by Contemporary Worshipers
Institutionalism then and now can be seen as a primary problem to Jesus' message
All religious institutional embeddedness is challenged by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus
