How might cultural context give meaning to a poem's allusions and provide connections to the poem's themes?
Elvis Presley
Full of hip and swang
This song is closely related to Elvis's career and what he prioritise as a singer: luxuries.
When he presented that it's okay to take away everything except the blue suede shoes, we can see how much Elvis loves to indulge the self-pride of having a luxury good, representing himself.

Ironic that it is warden who "threw a party in the jail." Contrasting atmosphere to how the jail originally feels like: dark, depressing..
Number forty-seven said to number three
"You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see" - Considering how there were only men in the music video, it is assumed that this sentence is said between the same sex. Bring in the social issue/topic of LGBT?

Music Video
The music video has taken in mono tone, and Elvis is singing with a rhythm of some sort with foot steps (maybe he's dancing...?)

Song
-
originally written and recorded as a conventional 12-bar blues song, written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and sung by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton
Madonna
-
Madonna had a very high pitch voice, which was very hard to understand. This high pitched voice emphasizes the image of a young girly girl
In the end, she shows the audience that money, fame, men isn't all. Meeting someone that truly cares for you and loves you for who you are is important
-
Virgin - a person who has never had sexual intercourse; a person who is naive, innocent, or inexperienced
She is saying that before meeting the guy she really loves, she wasn't alive and she wasn't herself.
-> "Can't you hear my heart beat for the very first time?"
When we watch the music video, we thought that the scene where she directly looking at the camera - like looking at the people who are watching the music video - was showing her real personality; also when she is alone herself in the music video. When she is alone, she looks more free, compare to the scene where she is with the guy. It seems like she is hiding her real personality and pretend herself like a "virgin", which is important to women.
-> alone herself = independent
The culture looks like forcing the women to be a "virgin", who is innocent and follow what men tell her to do.
Use "virgin" to emphasize how she felt (in the lyrics).
"Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
When your heart beats (after first time, "With your heartbeat")
Next to mine"
She has a nasal and high pitched voice (feminine voice), which shows the typical character of women in that time.
kd lang
- K.D Lang is lesbian. In the music video, K.D Lang doesn't express her femininity, which makes the audience think that she's male. I think the song, "Trail of Broken Hearts", describes that K.D Lang herself is in the trail of broken hearts. The lyrics of
Trail of Broken Hearts: relief, mellow
K D Lang does not act or look like a stereotypical 1990's female singer. She has short hair, and at first listen has the same voice range as Roy, her duet partner
K D Lang's voice is deep, though it's not as husky as Elvis's voice. However, her voice is as emotional. Their narrative form of love song is also similar
She sings with emotion, as if she's *'. She sings lyrics that sound like they are fit to come from a man's perspective. It almost sounds as if two men are serenading their love.
Music video: Both Roy and K D are shown in the same lighting (black and white) to make it seem as if they are equal
To dance is human, but to polka is divine

The singer has a similar vibe that Evis has. The performance's atmosphere seems to be influenced by Elvis.
Hanky Panky: informal, humorous
Behavior, in particular sexual or legally dubious behavior, considered improper but not seriously so.
Directions: 1) watch your assigned music video; 2) make notes (using the darkly shaded link) of your observations about the video, focusing on ideas about culture and women; 3) read "Elvis's Twin Sister"; :fire: Use this inquiry question to guide your analysis of "Elvis's Twin Sister" in an informal presentation to the group
