GMO - Jacob Lombardo
CONCERNS :warning:
There hasn’t been full testing on GMOs, so we don’t yet fully know if they are good or bad.
“The biggest concern is that there has not been enough testing of GMO’s and no real long term testing to detect possible problems” (GMO’s Pros and Cons - CNN).
For example, CNN was talking about a study from Iowa State University, that explains that foods have had antibiotic features added to them so they are resistant to certain diseases and viruses, and when humans eat them, these antibiotics features persist in our bodies and make actual antibiotic medications less effective. This explains that there are still some things that haven't been fully tested, and we are still learning.

BENEFITS :<3:
Food is healthier, more nutritious, and is better designed to lessen the obesity rate in America.
“The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations reports that some GMO foods have been engineered to be more nutritious in terms of mineral or vitamin content” (Pros and Cons of GMOs).
Golden Rice is a great example of a GMO food that is specifically designed to help defeat malnutrition. It is a special type of rice that is planted with extra Vitamin A. This little improvement helped families all over the globe with Vitamin A deficiencies.

CLAIM BENEFIT: A main benefit of the GMO is the fact that it can help end world hunger because it is manufactured with extra vitamins and it is made in very large quantities.
EVIDENCE: "GMOs are one way to make enough nutritious food available with limited land, water, and other resources” (The Truth About GMOs). This means that with are growing population, decreasing farmland due to construction, and many droughts that America is going through, are only solution to our problem are GMO foods. Along with this, America is losing 9.5 acres of farmland per minute!
COUNTERCLAIM:(Leilani P.) If the GMO foods grow in larger quantities, why are poor countries still struggling, and the foods are grown is places that aren't in need of the food?
COUNTERARGUMENT: Like I said before, there are protests that are trying to prevent GMO foods. These protests would probably be the main cause of the lack of food. Along with this, these people might not know where to look for these foods, probably because they have never heard of GMO foods. (This is because most people don't know about GMOs). These are the reasons why people are still struggling to get GMO foods.
CLAIM CONCERN: Most companies are fighting the law that states that companies have to label GMOs. If they have nothing to hide, why are they fighting the law?
EVIDENCE: “GMO companies spend millions of dollars – billions of them, collectively – to stop or at least slow down federal and state GMO labeling laws” (Stop Poisoning Us). This quote is showing that a lot of companies are willing to spend large amounts of money, even billions of dollars just to slow down the process of GMO Labeling laws. If they have nothing to hide, why are they spending so much money?
COUNTERCLAIM:(Leilani P.) When the companies label that there are GMOs in their ingredients, people might not want to but the product, and usually foods with GMOs are less expensive. If people don't buy their product they might bankrupt.
COUNTERARGUMENT: Over 50% of people (53%) and over 75% of people (3/4) stated that they either know what GMOs are or they know a little about them. If people already know what GMOs are, then why haven't companies started to go bankrupt. They are aware that these are in their foods.
