GMO - Ruby L
CONCERNS :red_cross:
Health Problems
“Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with genetically modified (GM) food (AAEM 2009),” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system" (Health Risks).
Alegic Reactions
With the mismatching of genes, it is possible to to have an allergic reaction. " . . .if a banana gene is added to corn, then it could cause an allergic reaction in people with rare banana allergies" (Should The U.S support...)
Harm the Environment
" Risks include potential allergies or potential antibiotic resistance. There is also the possibility that genetically modified foods enter the food supply inadvertently from planting GMO crops near non-GMO crops, without knowledge from the consumer. As genetically modified crops would have to be grown, there are concerns about the effect they would have on the surrounding environment" (The “Golden Rice” Debate)
BENEFITS :check:
Save lives
Almost 3.1 million children die from lack of vitamin A. Many others go blind. But there is a solution. Golden Rice. Golden rice is a GM rice, infused with a higher content of vitamin A, and used in countries in dire need of nutrients.
Could end starvation
The aqua-bounty salmon grows twice as fast, and if twice as large as the original salmon. It will be sold for less, and feed more. Because it would be farmed indoors, or close the land, it would be much cheaper, and lessen our carbon foot print.
CITATION: ". . .producing the fish in captivity, in closed systems, would dramatically reduce transport costs and improve the whole supply chain. Dr Stotish explained that this would have a huge environmental impact, reducing the industry's carbon footprint" (Genetically modified salmon: changing the future).
CLAIM - Not all GMOs are environmentally friendly, and they can cause health issues.
". . .environmentalists are concerned that these fish may interact with the natural ecosystems in harmful ways. They are primarily concerned about the ability of transgenic fish to compete, persist and reproduce in a natural environment, essentially becoming an invasive species. There are many reasons to think that high levels of growth hormone may influence these abilities. . ." (Are GMO Fish Safe...).
COUNTER: You are correct, but if Aqua-bounty Salmon does become an invasive species, which it most likely will NOT, wouldn't that just mean more food for humans to eat?
COUNTERARGUMENT - As stated in the evidence, the larger, unnatural salmon could compete with other fish and animals, or breed with them, which would negatively affect the ecosystem, and food chain.
