Benefits
Produces more Nutrients
Young children all over the world are dying from malnutrition each year, up to 3.1 million recently. As you can clearly see, taking in the right amount of nutrients daily means the difference between life or death. GMOs like Golden Rice have been made to help out children who are experiencing a vitamin A deficiency.
“For example, engineers are able to create rice that has vitamin A and iron. The modified rice is more nutritious” (Should the U.S. Support...).
If someone is lacking nutrients in their diet, food can be grown to contain higher concentrations of that vitamin to help make these vitamins more accessible.
Can Cure Illnesses
Added vitamins in these modified organisms can help cure illnesses like common colds, headaches, stomach aches and many more!
The Hawaiian Papaya was struck with the Ringspot Virus around the 1940s, and it spread across Hawaii and infected the majority of these papaya plants. In 1998, a modified version of the fruit was developed and released, saving the Hawaiian grown fruit from total extinction.
Solution to Hunger
Lots of undernourished people all over the world lack food and are forced to starve each day. Some 800 million of starving people around the world can benefit greatly from foods that can be grown and produced in even the worst conditions.
“Genetically engineering food could help feed the 800 million undernourished people in the world” (Should the U.S. support…).
The modified food can be grown quicker and cheaper, making it easier (economically) to grow and sell!
Concerns

Can Harm the Environment
Ecosystems and and crop grown wildly can be affected by the herbicides, pesticides, and other sprays used to regulate crop growth in agriculture. Pollinators like bees, butterflies and other helpful creatures can be harmed and killed with these pesticides, therefore lowering the population of these helpful creatures.
-
GM seeds can be spread by birds and pollinators and into the wild, which can disrupt plant growth and balance in an ecosystem that is not adjusted to modified crop.
-
CLAIM: GMOs are harmful to the people and to the environment. There is also little documentation on what goes into these GMOs or how they're grown!
Evidence: OneGreenPlanet described the situation between GMOs and the environment by writing, “Monarch butterflies are specifically at risk from GMO maize plants” (The Environmental Impact of GMOs). Endangered insects and other species of pollinators are affected by the pesticides and herbicides used to grow these crop. Also, whats actually used on these crops are kept secret and can only be found after searching through what products are used to grow crop on a GMO field.
COUNTERCLAIM (Robby): The evidence is correct but what if we just made the plants GMO's but make the genes ineffective at killing bees and butterflies.
COUNTERARGUMENT: Making a pesticide or herbicide that will not kill pollinators or other helpful creatures would require for a more expensive modified pesticide or herbicide, which could potentially cost farmers more than what they already pay.
