Benefits :check:
Solving World Hunger: GMO's can produce a lot more food and may be a possible solution for world hunger. GMO's could help feed countries like Africa.
-
Statistic: There are 6 billion people on this Earth. 800 million of those people are starving. GMO corn or Maize is drought resistant and salient resistant, can improve Africa's productivity by 1.5 times.
-
Better for the environment: GMO's are better for the environment because they don't require farmers to use pesticides, and reduce greenhouse gases.
-
Statistic: The EPA reported that in 2001 that 4.9 billion pounds of pesticides were used, which is about 4.5 pounds per person.
-
More nutritious: GMO's can be more nutritious and are infused with extra vitamins and proteins that can help prevent diseases and malnutrition.
-
Statistic: 3.1 million children die from hunger or malnutrition each year. 250,000 to 500,000 children go blind each year from vitamin A deficiency.
-
Concerns :red_cross:
-
Reverse Vaccines: Some GMO's have features/genes that are resistant to pesticides and antibiotics, and may cause vaccines to become less effective on the consumer that consumed them.
Quote: “Some GMO foods have had antibiotic features added to them so they are resistant to certain diseases and viruses. When humans eat them, these antibiotics features persist in our bodies and make actual antibiotic medications less effective, according to Iowa State University” (http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-957532).

Claim: A big concern of any, and all GMO's is that they can cause allergies to people who eat them.
Evidence: A GMO rice, golden rice, has extra vitamin A, and could help the people who die from vitamin deficiency.
Counterclaim: Even though vitamin A deficiency may help, will it cost a lot to grow? Will it take a long time for it to be shipped.
Evidence: In recent studies, scientists have discovered that certain GMO's have caused allergies in some people.
Counterclaim: How many people have developed these allergies? Is it rare? Have there been any deaths from the allergies?
Counterargument: Actually golden rice is very easy and cheap to grow, and the amount of time it will take to ship the seeds to other countries depends, as it could only take a few days or it could take a few weeks.
Counterargument: There is no certain number known of people who have these allergies, but allergies have increased by 400% since GMO's have been introduced. These allergies are actually quite common but no deaths have occurred from these allergies.
