Chronicle Chronic Blame

Pablo and Pedro Vicario are number one because they were the actual people that murdered Santiago.

Angela Vicario is number two because there is a strong possibility that she lied about what Santiago did to her, condemning him to death.

Divina Flor is number four because near the end of Santiago's life, she could have done things to prevent, or at least delay, the murder.

Bishop is number three because without his presence, Santiago would have protected himself by bringing his gun.

These brothers were the actual people who killed Santiago Nasar with knives.

Cristo Badoya "asked Divina Flor again if she was sure that Santiago Nasar hadn't come in through the living room door" (105).

Blamed Santiago for taking her virginity away with no proof that he was the one who did it. This gave her brothers, Pablo and Pedro, to kill Santiago.

All of the events that were out of the ordinary caused Santiago to die, which all come from the fact that the Bishop decided to come to town, even though he hated the town.

"Santiago Nasar raised his hand to stop the first strike from Pedro Vicario, who attacked him on the right side with his knife pointed straight in" (117).

"She only took the time necessary to say the name. She looked for it in the shadows, she found it at first sight among the many, many easily confused names from this world and the other, and she nailed it to the wall with her well-aimed dart, like a butterfly with no will whose sentence has always been written. 'Santiago Nasar,' she said" (47).

Since she said his name so quickly after all of the trauma that she endured from her mother, there is a large possibility that she is lying about how this event happened, she is lying about Santiago being the one to take her virginity and was just angry at him for some reason, or Santiago really did take her virginity.

Because the description of this event is coming from Angela with no other person to back up her story, she may be lying about the swiftness at which she said his name.

She also may have lied to her mother and brothers about Santiago being the one to take her virginity. Since she said his name so quickly, she may have had motivation to punish him because he did something to her that she did not like.

More motivation could have come from the fact that Santiago was an outsider, an Arab, who was not well liked in the town. She may have thought that if she named him then there wouldn't be many questions asked and her honor could be restored quicker.

The other possibility is that she was telling the truth about everything that happened. That would go against the fact that Santiago said that he didn't do it and the fact that they were never seen together.

When abiding by the law, Pablo and Pedro were the actual murderers of Santiago, so they should go directly to jail. Don't pass go. Don't collect $200.

The main problem occurred when Santiago left the house without his gun.

"If it hadn't been for the bishop's arrival, he would have dressed in his khaki outfit and the riding boots he wore on Mondays to go to The Diving Face, the cattle ranch he'd inherited from his father... In the country he wore a .357 Magnum on his belt, and its armored bullets" (5).

It is Divina's fault that she told Cristo that Santiago wasn't home, even though he was, which led to Cristo leaving the house to look for him to warn him that he was about to be killed.

Divina Flor had also locked the front door so that when Santiago was running away from the Vicario brothers he was locked out of the house.
