What is Immigration?
Immigration is the act of moving from one country to another country.
Immigrants came in two waves
First wave vs. Second wave
Over 25 million immigrants came to america between the both of the waves
The 1st wave consisted of more english speakers than the second wave
The first wave mainly came from Northern and Western Europe while the Second wave came mainly from Southern and Eastern Europe
1st wave consisted of many people that were Irish and the 2nd wave consisted of many people that were Italian and German
2nd Wave
Immigrated from Southern and Eastern Europe
Immigrants went to the united states looking for a better life
People had to immigrate mainly because the amount of farmland was shrinking
Other immigrants sought religious freedom
The rest left due to political unrest
Reasons for immigrating

Nativists were also known as the " Know-Nothings"
The "Know-Nothings" were a political party that wanted to preserve the the country for only white, american-born protestants. The Nativists especially opposed Irish immigrants.
